On 11 September, the Conservative Cabinet member at Norfolk County Council said “I can assure that there is no intention for Holt Hall to be closed for good”. Yet just 4 weeks later on 8 October the decision was taken to close the Hall.
Liberal Democrat Councillor for Holt Sarah Butikofer said: “The outdoor education centre has hosted thousands of children for activity days over the past 70 years. The pandemic has made us realise the importance of outdoor spaces on our wellness and health. We need to see if there’s a way to save the facility before any decisions are rushed into. Once you’ve sold assets like this off you can’t get them back.”
Sarah added “I will do all I can to help save the centre. I value the experiences children gain at the centre far too highly to lose it so easily.”
Liberal Democrat group leader Steff Aquarone said ”Outdoor learning provides a whole host of learning and health benefits to children who visit them. I know several constituents in Melton Constable who are well into adulthood, and remember their visits to Holt Hall fondly.”
“The Conservatives’ attempt to hide this decision from public examination is despicable. Their failure to control their overspending means the people of Norfolk will lose out again.”
Steff added “It is yet another example of poor short term thinking by the Conservative administration which will reduce the long outcomes for Norfolk’s children.”
