John Crofts

North Coast seat

I’ve recently retired as the Headmaster of a school in Hunstanton. My wife Bridget passed away suddenly in November 2019, so now it’s just me and my Golden Retriever, Merlin, although I have three grown-up children to remind me when I need to move with the times!

I am involved locally in a variety of ways: as Governor/Trustee of two academies and a sports club, as President of Hunstanton and District Rotary Club, as Church Warden of St Andrew’s in Ringstead and during the pandemic as a volunteer with the Royal Voluntary Service.

My motivation for standing in this election is simple; over the many years, I have spent living and working in our community I have come to understand the vital importance of high-quality services, both private and public, in ensuring that the quality of life in this beautiful area remains high. There are urgent issues which the County Council needs to address: tackling environmental challenges along our delightful coast, including flooding and pollution along the A149; enhancing support for businesses and individuals as they seek to recover from the pandemic; ensuring high quality educational provision and support for young people; increasing affordable housing in an area where accommodation costs continue to be obstinately high and improving transport links to allow the young to remain in our area and all those without cars to access the essential services they need. And this of course is not a complete list.

In Norfolk, the ruling Conservative group likes to concentrate power tightly within their small political circle without listening to any dissenting voices. My view is that this is no way to run Norfolk County Council. Decision-making needs to be opened up, allowing the many community voices and different strands of opinion to be heard freely. Elected representatives need to listen to people rather than dictate to them. It is a very different political culture to the Conservative approach, but one which if you decide to elect me on 6th May I pledge to uphold.
